Share trading Lessons from FIFA World Cup

• Have you ever wondered what is it about the game of soccer that literally makes the viewers go crazy?
• After all it is a 90-minute game interspersed with a small break and at best extendable by another 30 minutes.
• There is something unique about the FIFA cup, a once in 4-years event. The 2014 world cup was viewed by nearly 25% of the world population.
• Russia in 2018 may better that record.
• Even a traditionally cricket-crazy India is gradually waking up to the visual pleasures of soccer.

View Innovations as Aggregate…

Of late, every time I fly to the US, it is generally British Airways. Having a house in Mumbai, I generally have dinner and sleep through the first leg from Mumbai to London.

When I do get up, I get to the back of the plane, grab a chocolate, chips and settle down to watch a movie…

As a break in my routine, this time, I skipped the chocolate, chips and just watched the movie. I did not miss much. Not that chocolate, chips have enough calories to disrupt my diet routine. Actually, it would not even matter assuming I will have to walk through Heathrow. However, what prompted me was “Viewing the Innovations as Aggregate” rule.

Let me tell you how it works…

Every time you aim to make an Innovation, big or small, try to look at a larger picture, try to make your Innovation as ‘Aggregate’, and not as Standalone.

In my case, although the chocolate, chips, do not add many calories, it was a conscious decision to stay away from “Junk Food” as part of a Healthy Lifestyle.

Some might argue that it was only a single time, and that too, while travelling. However, the Innovation made is not for that one time, but for lifetime.  It could actually mean a compromise to the building right goal. One needs to evaluate the Cumulative or Aggregate effect of a small choice on Innovation, over a length of time. And, understand how this small choice contributes to a larger consequence over time.

So how can we use it in our daily life?

Every time you think of putting away a small enhancement for process, or neglect an outstanding idea just because it came from a source you did not like. Check for the cumulative effect of such actions over time.

Ask yourself these quick questions:

  • What does your enhancement mean in the larger scheme of things?
  • Is the Innovation good for the account atmosphere?
  • Will you gain/loss from that spontaneous rejection of the idea?

Once you have analyzed this, you’ll have your answer and you’ll do, what is better for a larger good of the Innovation, yourself and the company. I agree it’s not easy, I’m still learning and trying to do it… I’m not even half-way there yet… But it’s something good and we must all strive to achieve it…

Also in this New Financial Year which started, let’s pledge to see all innovative ideas in a larger light and not reject any of the…

Process Inefficiency and Work Innovations

There has been many theories of how innovation can be brought about in the work place. An ideal innovation loving culture like Facebook or Google is often showed as an example. Of course a conductive, incubation like environment to think and innovate is an ideal case scenario. And we as Amdocs have taken a step in the right direction with Innovation labs and separate areas and competitions to facilitate the same.

However, I feel the most Innovations comes from processes that are inefficient. Let’s take the basic example, Why was wheel invented? The person who got tired of carrying his wares by himself or on a sledge, felt it was grossly inefficient and he needed a better way to carry his ware.

Professor John Atanasoff, who built the world’s first electronic digital computer, way back in the late 1930’s was asked  Why did he do this?

He said, “I was too inefficient to calculate and so I invented the computer.”

So much is the power of inefficiency that I personally would not mind spending 2 hours refining a process that will help me do a 30 minutes task in 15 minutes next time I do it. Of course it has to do to a large extent with my Six Sigma Black Belt DNA too.

I distinctly remembered being asked to write a set of rules when I joined the new team. A task of 5 days needed tedious replication of work and repetition of steps. My manager was amazed when I completed it in 3 days. The way was to automate the repetition and using ShortKey tool for replication and error reduction. The gist being, there is always a need for work innovation in case of process inefficiencies.

Many people would classify the task improvement as shortcuts. Let me tell you from firsthand experience that, the process of simplifying task takes a lot of effort. However once you develop a new innovation, you get to leverage it over and over again. So in the long run, you are ahead of the curve.

Leverage here is the key word. Innovation often involves the creation of something that results in exponential returns.  The development of the computer by Professor John Atanasoff certainly did this. So did my two Six Sigma process improvements which stream lined and removed inefficiency and in turn saved considerable money.

So when you see inefficiency, do you grump over it or run away? Or Do you take it head on and improvise and innovate to make a better work environment? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Innovate and Ring out the old, Ring in the new...

Isn’t it amazing that the quote by Alfred Tennyson almost a century and a half ago in 1850 is just as valid today for Innovation!!!

As we enter the last week of the Amdocs Lifehacks Blogging Competition, let’s take a moment to retrospect on what we have done and achieved.
Of course, innovating things gives us a lot of moments to be considered achievement,
In addition, I would like you to introspect as well on the personal front…

Way Forward:
Let’s Try creating something new, learn new language, and learn musical instrument or even a professional course.
Let’s try to move out of our cozy confined zones and go out in to explore our passions for new creations.
Be it innovations at Movie, Home, vacation and Work.

And just like every constraints, this constraint is meant to be broken too.
However, let’s make the most of the constraint and break free from some of our very mundane tasks by Innovative ways

Let’s continue the momentum generated in the last weeks and carry it forward to the future weeks too. I resolve to blog atleast once in 2 weeks. I also resolve to identify possible process inefficiencies in my area and try innovate ways to fix it..

What do you Intend to do?
Suggest your steps in the comments below..

Also in a Deeper Sense:
All the stanzas of Alfred Tennyson had Ring out, Ring in except this…
Feel free to ponder and maybe take it as Way Forward for Innovation…
Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.
